The Anderton Boatlift, in nearby Northwich, was the world’s first boat lift, built in 1875 to transfer salt barges between the River Weaver and the Trent and Mersey Canal 50ft above. It’s just a 10 minute drive from The Hive at 52, and well worth a visit when you stay with us for anyone with an interest in engineering history or the history of Northwich. It’s also a good start point for walks along the canal.
