Staying with us and wondering what to do with your time? Things to do in Cheshire. Looking for local activities for you, we think you are spoilt for choice. All of the suggestions in this blog are within six miles of your door! Less time in the car and more time enjoying yourselves. Whether you are travelling as a couple or with a few friends, there is something here for every pace and every age.
Walk among the trees at Delamere Forest.
Delamere is the largest area of woodland in Cheshire and a firm local favourite. Run by Forestry England, it offers brilliant trails for every ability, plenty of space for you to burn off energy, and a train station right in the middle of the forest.
Autumn is a particularly good time to visit. The larch on the Old Pale hillside puts on a display of warm colour, and the Blakemere Trail is a lovely choice for both leaf-spotting and birdwatching. If you would like somewhere quieter, try Whitefield, a calmer corner of the forest with natural play areas and a fitness trail. Pack a flask, wear sturdy footwear and allow a few hours.
Looking for a bit more action? Check out Go Ape, and if you are looking to book, let us know we have a little code for you!
Tip: Check the Forestry England website for parking details and opening times before you set off.

Go horse riding at Sandy Lane Equestrian.
If you have ever fancied a ride through the Cheshire countryside, Sandy Lane Equestrian is a friendly, family-run riding school on our doorstep. They welcome everyone from toddler beginners to advanced riders, and they offer hacks around the local fields, which are a wonderful way to see the area from a different perspective.
There is a covered arena and a separate floodlit arena, both with seated viewing galleries, so non-riders can watch in comfort. On-site parking, refreshments and a shop mean you have everything you need. Younger guests might enjoy a pony day, and lessons are booked online through their ECPro system, so it is worth planning ahead.
Tip: Check Sandy Lane Equestrian’s website for futher information about booking & equipment hire.
Meet the Birds at Vale Royal Falconry
For something truly memorable, book a bird of prey experience with Vale Royal Falconry. Phil and Nanette are experienced falconers with a real passion for conservation and education, and they take time to explain British birds of prey, their habitats and the ancient art of falconry.
Their experiences can be tailored to suit you, which makes them ideal for a special occasion or a treat for the whole family. All visits are by prior appointment only, so get in touch before your stay to secure your date.
Tip: It is a 15 minute walk to Vale Royal Falconry, check out what else their other activities here.
Have a Splash at Weaverham Pool
Fancy to work of last nights dinner & wine, or you simply fancy a relaxing dip, Weaverham Pool is a welcoming community pool run by FineSwim. The water is kept warm, at around 32 to 33 degrees, which makes it particularly pleasant for anyone who dislikes a chilly plunge.
The pool is compact, at 12 metres by 5 metres, so it suits for a gentle swimming rather than serious lengths. It is open seven days a week for public swimming, and you can also look at lane hire, morning swims or exclusive pool hire if you are travelling as a group. Please contact the team in advance to check availability: 01606 539919, Fineswim.co.uk or fineswimming@outlook.com

Go Running Along the River Weaver and Trent and Mersey Canal
If you enjoy an early-morning run, you are in the right place. The River Weaver and the Trent and Mersey Canal offer flat, traffic-free routes that suit beginners and seasoned runners alike. Head out along the towpath towards Marbury Country Park, where you can take in the woodland and the shores of Budworth Mere, then loop back via the Northwich Flashes.
The Flashes are a wonderful patchwork of wetland, reedbeds and open water created by historic salt subsidence, and they attract a great variety of birdlife. Keep an eye out for herons, kingfishers and waterfowl as you go. You will pass narrowboats, quiet moorings and plenty of spots to pause and take photographs.
The route can be shortened or extended to suit you, and it works just as well as a gentle walk. Towpaths can be muddy after rain, so wear appropriate trainers, and please be considerate of walkers, cyclists and anglers along the way.
Looking for running routes, just ask us and we are happy to direct you.
